The result in an legal matter depends at least in part on the cost to obtain it. Since no two legal matters are exactly alike, I would be happy to discuss with you the likely cost of any legal matter that I may handle for you. That discussion would include the options that you have to potentially reduce those costs and the trade-offs that those options entail. While I do my best to foresee the actions of any opposing party, please know that a variety of factors can affect the overall expense that are completely out of the control of any lawyer you may choose. For instance, an opposing party may refuse to provide discovery, a particular judge may wish to hold more frequent status conferences to keep a case on track, or an opposing party may disclose a large number of witnesses that must then be contacted and possibly deposed.
While I handle most matters on an hourly rate basis, I am willing to discuss the possibility of handling certain matters on a contingent fee, flat fee, or more creative billing arrangement. On hourly rate matters, I provide my clients with detailed descriptions of the work performed that includes an explanation as to why it was necessary to advance their goals. I record my time in 1/10th hour increments and discuss any outside expenses with them before those expenses are incurred. My practice is to send invoices no less frequently than monthly so that my clients have the opportunity to review them, ask any questions about the work being performed, and better control legal costs.
